treatment basics

options / cancer therapy

Cancer therapies vary in kind and treatment options are often affected by the type of cancer we are tryng to treat, in addition to other factors. Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to discerning the best course of treatment. So, we at CCCB, have gathered a highly specialized team of experts whose sole purpose is to determine the best course of action for you and your family. At CCCB, you are not alone in this process. To help you understand your options, we have listed and explained them below. There is a lot of information, so the most important thing to remember is, that we are in it together. Now let’s take a look at what we can do for you.

Regardless of the type of cancer, there are three basic treatment options. Because CCC of Brevard knows that understanding your treatment options will better enable you to make the best decision for you and your family, below is an outline of these options.

Surgery is employed to confirm the presence of cancer, as in a biopsy or to remove all or part of a cancerous tumor.

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs, usually given by mouth or injection to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy is systemic, i.e., that it travels through the entire blood stream.

Radiation Therapy is the use of high-energy radiation to destroy cancer cells. Radiation is a local treatment, i.e., the radiation is directed to a designated area of the body. Many times people are treated with combinations of these methods.

The best treatment for each individual is determined by a variety of factors including the type of cancer involved, where it is located and how extensive it is. The newest technology available is called CyberKnife®, a radiation therapy administered with sub-millimeter accuracy which provides coverage for any tumor volume.
